Walking holidays

The landscape is stunning here in this region of south west France. The rolling hills and endless grapevines provide a wonderful backdrop for walking holidays. May / June and September / October is a great time to plan a walking trip to this region. The weather is beautifully warm and reliable, and the tourist numbers are low.

There is an extensive network of public footpaths. We are keen walkers so have explored most of the local routes. Signposted walks range from 4km to 20km and most are circular.

Walking holidays at Cottages de Garrigue

Cottages de Garrigue is a great base for walking and exploring. We're rurally based, but close enough to towns and villages with lots of restaurants and shops. We will be happy to help plan your activities.

Our three cottages suit all group sizes from couples, up to 16 people. We have 3 self catering cottages and for larger groups we can discuss breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals.

Dordogne & lot et Garonne

We are located on the southern Dordogne border with the Lot et Garonne department (equivalent of a UK county). Both are rural and impressive. The mighty Dordogne, Lot and Garonne rivers pass through this region on their way to the Atlantic coast. To the east are 80km of vineyards heading to Bordeaux. To the west is the Dordogne valley that becomes more forested, with cliffs over the river. To the immediate south is the L'Escourou reservoir with the rolling hills beyond, and to the north are the ancient towns of Bergerac and Périgueux.

The far-reaching views are typified by Périgordian buildings, arable farmland, neat grape vines, oak forests and the winding rivers. Old tobacco sheds, churches and water towers pin point historic interest. The region is seasonally important for orchids, truffles and hearty food.

Mapping

This region of France has excellent public walking paths. The randonnées (hikes) are popular here. There are 20 set walks in our immediate area and probably hundreds within an hour 's drive of us. The yellow map routes and signposts denote the circular walks (boucle) and the green paths are the interconnecting routes meaning circular walks can be linked into longer hikes.

We can help provide guides, maps and advice. The local tourist office has great information.

Planning

Walking days out are easy to plan. The route guides get you started, and it's easy to incorporate a picnic or restaurant stop (restaurant lunch is strictly 12h00 - 14h00 in this region). You can expect to drive 20+ minutes to the starting village. Most villages have a parking area with a walking map notice board. Don't forget good footwear and plenty of water!
